Kindergarten classes at Compton Gardens

HAPPY EARTH DAY 2021!

To celebrate Earth Day the kindergarten classes visited Compton Gardens in Bentonville to learn about native plants of the Ozarks and the life cycle of butterflies.  During their visit students visited different habitats on the grounds of Compton Gardens. Mrs. Susan Glenn who is a Master Gardener and volunteer for Compton Gardens guided the kindergarten classes through a meadow and explained why this type of habitat is not just important  natural for wwildlife but for peole as well. Did you know that 90% of the wild plants and 75% of crops depend on pollination from insects and animals?

Mr. Aaron Jones, Director of Arts Integration for AAA, led a conversation at a spring habitat in front of a grove of Pawpaw trees where students learned about the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly, the only species of kite butterfly that lives in the United States.  Did you know that the swallowtail butterfly will only lay its eggs on the Pawpaw tree?

To help AAA with the creation of an outdoor classroom Compton Gardens donated several native species of flowers and plants to each kindergarten class. Students will take care of the plants in class for a couple of weeks and plant them on the elementary campus in May.

Thank you Compton Gardens! HAPPY EARTH DAY!
