Students discuss angles at a David Smith sculpture

The 4th grade class visited Crystal Bridges as part of the My School My Museum (MSMM) partnership program. The MSMM program is collaboration between Crystal Bridges, Arts Integration and the 4th grade class. AAA teachers, the Director of Arts Integration and Museum Educators work to align subject-area standards with arts standards using works of art in the museum's collection as the point of connection. The results are an immersive educational experience that allows the Museum to serve as extension of the classroom.

This visit focused on Math and Science!  Museum educators selected four objects from the collection to make connections with a specific core discipline. Students learned about geometric shapes and angles at David Smith’s lively stainless steel sculpture 5 Ciarcs.  Transfer of energy and refraction were brilliantly illustrated and demonstrated and Frederick Eversley’s Big Red Lens and Alexander Hogue’s Pecos Escarpment

After an informative visit to the galleries and a tasty lunch students gathered in a classroom and participated in arts integration project.  Museum Educator Sigrid Goodwin led students in creating a colorful, synchromatic work of art as they listened to different genres of music and represented the sound in color and line.  The completed works revealed strong connections to one of the objects they learned about on their tour, the painting Au Café (Synchromoy) created by American artist Stanton MacDonald-Wright.

Thank you Crystal Bridges Museum and THANK YOU Museum Educators Paramita Sarkar, Sigrid Goodwin, Matthew Gibbon and Melena Perry! We look forward to next year’s program!
