Part 3- A Single Shard: Community Creative Center

Earlier this month the 6th grade class visited the Community Creative Center (CCC) in Fayetteville to create a Celadon inspired vessel as part of a continued arts integration project. The idea came from Language Arts Teacher, Mrs. La Vona Cerna. Since the beginning of the semester students have been reading the novel A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park in Mrs. Cerna’s class. As a creative method to measure student learning, the class was provided the opportunity to research, design, create and embellish a vessel that incorporated the shape, color and iconography described in the novel.

The vessels have been fired and were delivered to the school this week and the results are stunning! The teachers unpacked a beautiful collection of student ceramics worthy to be housed in the palace of an emporer (or at least recieve an A+ from the teacher- hint, hint, wink, wink Mrs. Cerna).

In addition to the Celadon inspired vessel, each student was also given “a single shard” from a slab in the shape of a Korean vase.  Students embellished their own piece and for the first time all shards were reassembled to reveal four completed vessels with brilliantly decorated individual shards of pottery.
